Bowls, mugs, and other travels utensils

They say tourism is to take as much food with you as possible, go as far as possible and eat everything there. True, you have to cook dinner without a stove, household appliances and most utensils. I’ll tell you what it is better to cook food on a camping trip and how you can eat it, later.

Everything to cook dinner and eat in nature

Food in the campaign plays a huge role: from physical activity, and fresh air a brutal appetite wakes up. Take kitchen equipment with you will not work. Everything has to be done with one knife, and a gas burner replaces the stove. If the set of tourist dishes is assembled correctly, cooking will not take much time and effort.

Usually, for convenience, all kitchen equipment is divided into personal and group. Each participant has personal equipment — usually this is a Mug, Spoon, Bowl, Knife.

For hot tea at a halt.

Mugs differ in volume and material. The volume ranges from 300 to 800 ml, and tourists most often choose the average displacement — 450 or 600 ml.

According to the material, the mugs are divided into plastic, stainless steel and titanium. Plastic is the cheapest but impractical material: it is easy to break in a backpack, it is difficult to wash and cannot be put on a burner or coals to heat it up. Steel is much stronger and more practical, but also heavier.

Titanium is the most modern and technological material: as durable and practical as steel, but much lighter. Titanium mugs is the most expensive.

Titanium thermos mug is a variant of one of the most practicals and popular models. It is lightweight with a folding handle and relatively inexpensive. True, the mug is single-walled, so drinks in it quickly cool down. However, it can be heated on a burner or coals: the material will withstand.

A more advanced model of the mug has a double-walled design, so, it keeps drinks hot longer. This effect is especially noticeable in the wind: in our camp at the pass, tea in an ordinary mug cooled for five minutes, and in a thermos mug it remained hot longer than in a general pot. There is only one minus model — a high price.

A spoon.

Combines several devices.

Spoons are usually made of plastic, titanium, and other metals. The designs differ: ordinary, with a shortened handle or folding spoons, hybrids of the spoon and fork — “traps.” Despite the apparent simplicity, a tourist spoon has many nuances in strength and convenience.

For example, the MSR Spoon folding spoon is made of food-grade plastic — such designs are very popular. This is an inexpensive and easy to process material, so a spoon is affordable. It is lightweight, compact when folded, but fragile in the place of folding: plastic hinges are a particularly vulnerable place. Slices of food usually gets stuck in this area, so, it is inconvenient to wash.

Engineer has improved a simple cutlery: made a light and durable, “trap” of titanium — a hybrid of a spoon and fork that can eat liquid food, and prick pieces. On the handle there is a special hook which is easy to remove the bowler from the fire without gloves. You can mix food with a fishing trough or scrub the burnt leftovers from the pot — it will not add up to the load. The main disadvantage: an awkward spoon is more difficult to pack, it may not fit in small pots.

In order not to burn yourself with hot porridge.

Travel bowls are usually made from food grade plastic, steel or titanium. The standard volume is 450-500 ml.

Food-grade plastic bowls are popular with tourists due to their low price and lightness. For example, the MSR Deep Dish Bowl is also inexpensive, lightweight, but strong enough. Plastic conducts heat worse than metal: you can take a bowl of hot food with your bare hands, and not get burned. Unfortunately, this bowl, like any plastic utensils, is difficult to wash without detergent, which is inconvenient in traveling conditions.

Double-walled titanium bowl is free from the disadvantages of plastic, or metal utensils: it is lightweight, does not heat, and cools very slowly. You can eat slowly and do not go to warm food. Only one drawback is the high price.

With a convenient blade and no extra features.

The Victorinox Sentinel penknife is a classic version of the compact folding knife which is perfect for hiking. It has everything that you might normally need on a camping trip. A medium-sized blade convenient enough for cooking. There are no unnecessary functions, so the knife is light. The model has a common drawback for all folding knives: it is difficult to wash.

Ordinary clumsy knives have their advantages: they are lighter, stronger, easier to wash and sharpen. The More Light My Fire Swedish Fire knife model has a flint built into the handle that will help out if matches are wet. The knife does not fold, so, it is not so compact, and it is not always convenient to carry it.

Cooking pots and pans.

For cooking for the whole group.

When choosing bowlers, volume, and material are important. Usually, 500 ml of volume is needed to prepare food for one person, but do not fill the water to the brim with a half-liter pot: when it boils, it will begin to pour over the edge. Optimal options: a pot with a volume of 600 ml for one person, 1200 ml for two, 1800 ml for three, and so on.

To cook food on the burner and on the fire, you need different dishes. Pots for burners are made of titanium or food steel: they are very light, the water in them quickly boils. They can be put on coals, but it is important to monitor the process: the kettle in the fire heats unevenly, and is easy to damage.

It is more convenient to use a set of dishes: you can take all the dishes or individual pans, depending on the number of participants in the trip. I like the MSR kit: two, pots that are easy to put one into the other with a removable handle that also hides inside the kit. Saucepans are coated with a non-stick Teflon coating that must be handled with care. The kit is technological, but quite expensive.

For a group of four people, a full set of dishes with pots, mugs, and bowls are useful. Non-stick pans, double-walled mugs and other items in the set can be conveniently cleaned one by one. This is a convenient option for a large company — however, quite expensive.

What kind of dishes do you need to eat comfortable on a camping trip.

  • A convenient and durable spoon — a hybrid with a fork. Plastic is easy to fold and store, while metal is stronger and more reliable.
  • A mug that holds heat for a long time. Plastic ones are lighter and cheaper, but cool faster than titanium ones.
  • Lightweight and durable bowl that is easy to wash. Unlike plastic, titanium can be heated at the stake.
  • A knife with a convenient blade and without unnecessary functions. A folding knife that is too complicated is not needed: it is heavy and not straightforward to wash.
  • A set of utensils for cooking. The number and size of bowlers depends on the size of the group, but it is better if they stack together.
